Homestead is a ~400 room employee housing complex located in Healy, Alaska. It houses roughly 750 employees who work at the Denali Princess Wilderness Lodge and the McKinley Chalet Resort. Homestead is broken up into two main parts - the main three-story building complex (Homestead) and a separate collection of two-story buildings (The Shire), each building in the Shire containing eight rooms, four bathrooms, and a laundry room. All first floor rooms and most 2nd floor rooms in the main Homestead building have built-in bathrooms. The 2nd and 3rd floors also have common bathrooms. Each floor has its own laundry room with several washers and dryers. The employee dining room (Mrs. B's) is located in the main building and serves three meals per day. Across the hall from Mrs B's is the Trading Post Bar - an employee frequented bar serving beer and wine which is also open to the general public. A gaming/recreation room is located in the main building and has pool tables, ping pong, small movie theaters, employee kiosk computers, and sitting areas. There is a gym, rec room, and kiosk computers in Suds - one of the larger external buildings. Employee buses typically run every hour between Homestead and the lodges in the canyon - a ten mile drive. We moved out because management didn't do anything. Mens bathrooms were out of order on 1st and 3rd floor and then they locked the 2nd floor bathrooms, security told me because people were not being responsible in there. We pay for them you cannot deny access because of a couple people, not to mention that it is illegal. We always had security knocking on the door at 3 Am waking us up when we had to be up at 5 for work. We just stopped answering the door to them. I had food poisoning 3 times there. I also never get sick but the food there has no nutritional value that I was always sick. I loved Alaska as a state but This place ruined my experience. It's essentially a prison camp for Holland America Princess employees. They serve food for employees i wouldn't feed my dog, the bathrooms are always disgusting, and should you do anything to slightly offend the big boss man's religion, you are fired and given two hours to leave with no help or sympathy if you have no money or nowhere to go. Last summer there were a group of six employees living in tents in the woods because they had nowhere to go. This place should be avoided at all costs. Good food, nice amenities, would recommend for those working the summer.
